Development direction of rock drilling equipment in China

Foreign hydraulic rock drilling equipment for tunneling construction has not been vigorously promoted in China. One reason is the concept of on-site management and construction personnel has not been changed in time. Second, the equipment reliability is insufficient, and imported equipment not only has high prices and maintenance costs, but also has a long replacement period for accessories, which affects the construction schedule. In fact, the fundamental reason is that imported equipment has not combined with the geological conditions, construction methods, construction techniques and construction environment in tunnel.

In summary, for the development of domestic rock drilling equipment, the following aspects should be considered:

1) The development of jumbo should take overall consideration of related processes to create conditions for efficient operation. while depth of common drilling equipment can reach about 4-6m without extention, so the drill jumbo’s rapid drilling efficiency cannot be fully reflected. At the same time, it’s not very applicable to drilling anchor bolt and lock-off rock bolt. Therefore, improving the trolley adaptability and versatility, will promote the mechanization of each drilling process and have a multiplier effect on the rock drilling rig promotion and application in tunnel.

2) The design of rock drilling equipment needs to achieve blasting and drilling hole. Ordinary rock drilling equipment has poor adaptability to invert arch excavation, and it is often necessary to equipped with pneumatic rock drilling equipment for manual auxiliary operations. Therefore, rock drilling equipment needs to take into account the drilling requirements of the face and invert arch to reduce the repeated configuration of equipment and personnel.

3) The boom account of rock drilling equipment need to be reasonably configured to improve its overall work efficiency. Although the single hole drilling speed of the rock drilling equipment is faster than manual, the overall work efficiency of single rig is lower than manual multi-rigs operation mode (generally 13-20 sets). This is also an important reason why large hydraulic rock drilling equipment have not been fully promoted in China. Therefore, it is particularly important to select the number of booms reasonably and improve the overall work efficiency of single equipment.
